You may not know who David Cherry is or what Monstar consists of, but in one attendance of a Monstar event, you will wish you had known well before about them both. More than just a promoter, David Cherry takes pride in his work with Monstar and his annual events gain more hype yearly. At the end of this article you will know why they call him VA's Diddy.

We actually met you on South Beach, and you seemed to be well connected down there. What is your affiliation with Miami?
Ahh Miami, my home away from home! I used to go to Miami for Spring Break while in college. I quickly got accustomed to the atmosphere and lifestyle. Over the years i've been embraced by all of the major movers & shakers down there. So when it came down to conducting business it was only right that I utilize Miami as one of my stomping grounds. Now I'm in Miami almost once a month, it's a beautiful thing. Plus it's Miami, no need to say anything else!

How did you originally get down with Monstar?
I credit my boy MG, President & CEO of Monstar, for approaching me about the idea back in college. He knew what I could offer, and he wanted me to be the face of the company, I slept at first, but MG was persistent. I finally got down and it's been a wrap ever since.

We see all over the site "Monstar...it's a lifestyle." What type of lifestyle does Monstar portray?
The answer is twofold. The obvious part is the lavish lifestyle, doing it BIG. Non-start talk about doing big things. Monstars do big things. And we're not worried about those little haters on the side because they can't do what we do anyways.

Doing things to the best of your ability is the other aspect. For that single mother of four, she probably can't live a lavish lifestyle and do it big because she is responsible for four other people. But if she works three jobs, doing whatever she has to do to provide for her children with the necessary tools they need to be successful, we acknowledge and respect her hustle. She's a Monstar...we see you mama!

You have another side of the Monstar site, Lady Monstar. Tell us what that consists of.
Lady Monstar is an extension catered to women. It focuses more on the modeling and fashion aspect of Monstar. We have Lady Monstars everywhere, and most are professional models.

Success with a business doesn't come overnight. What were some of the hardships you had to overcome?
We had to continually push the Monstar & D. Cherry name. Both are well known in V.A. and D.C., but we needed that same recognition in other spots major like Miami, N.Y., Vegas, and California. It does require alot of traveling, but I enjoy it.

You travel a lot also. How do you keep up with everything on the site and promo/events you do?
The Monstar staff consisting of MG, J. Dot, and Snuggs handle the day to day operations and the store. They do a great job of making sure everything runs smoothly while i'm out on the scene. We also have DJ Kid Quest handling the music side, he's a major player in the industry.

Do you have annual events that you carry out yearly?
Yes, D. Cherry's Annual Birthday Bash and Christmas Party.

What can a person expect at a D. Cherry event?
Expect a great, drama free evening with a mature, diverse, beautiful crowd, and a DJ spinning the hottest music. And I stress drama free because there is nothing worse than having a hot event cut short due to some nonsense. Each event is professionally videotaped and photographed, and we all know how people love to be in front of a camera. And then there is the element of surprise. I'm known for having special guests come through and I always give free gifts.

All of your annual events take place in Washington D.C. Why is that?
D.C. has everything ... diversity, major venues, politics, music, sites, money, colleges, professional sports, athletes, celebrities, models, etc. It's also easily accessible and has that tourist appeal. You'd be surprised, a lot of people have never been to D.C., and they want to personally experience te nation's capital.

Is there a lot of pressure during the planning process for your annual events?
Absolultely! When your events have a reputation, people expect certain things. So I constantly have to come up with new ideas, raise the bar, do it bigger than the last event. Having that Monstar stamp on there also adds pressure. People don't realize the extensive planning that goes into each event; it's a lot of pressure and stress, But D. Cherry is built for it, and I'm fortunate to have a great team that helps me tremendously. It's so funny, the actual event is the most stress free part of the process. I already know the event will be a success, it's just pleasing to see it finally come into fruition.

Tell us about your birthday bashes.
Crazy, ridiculous, sick, off the hook! I consider my birthday a national holiday, and I believe everyone was born in August... so when I celebrate my birthday, everybody celebrates! I'm serious man, you can ask anybody, D. Cherry has never had a dull birthday. Even as a little kid, I always had birthday parties, Now it's out of control, about to be a week long celebration, taking over several cities...yessir!

Being a young successful entrepreneur, have you thought about sharing your success story or show the youth ther are different ways to become successful?
Ok, I need to be upfront because I take this issue very seriously. I love the youth, I work with them. With all the peer pressure,I can't imagine trying to grow up in today's society. If you're young and successful, it's your social responsibility to share your experience. And if you're a black male, it's imperative that you step up to the plate. Get involved, be a mentor! Kids are looking up to the wrong people as role models. We got to stop waiting for the parent(s) to make a difference. And don't think that donating money is sufficient. Sure, money helps, but kids want your time. If you take time to interact with them, they'll take heed and listen to what you have to say. I can go on and on about this issue.

Any plans to have more yearly events?
I get tat question ALL the time. Actully Monstar has events often, but there are only two annual D. Cherry events. I just prefer quality over quanitity. The annual events currently remain at two per year but the number may change, We'll see!

Follow that star"In Love"

Love Nightclub has always treated Monstar well. We have held our annual holiday party at Love for the last two years and this year was by far the best one yet. Of course we had the host with the most, D. Cherry, holding it holding it down for all in attendance. Shout out to Marc and Taz, DJ Clue, and the whole Monstar family for a night to remember.
